Mariel and Francis

I met Mariel in Red Hook, outside of a house that was gutted. She was sifting through piles of what had been inside and told me that it all belonged to her friend Francis. Francis is blind and uses a wheelchair. She met him in 1981, when he would sit outside on the sidewalk and listen to Mets games. When Sandy hit, she drove Francis to Brooklyn Heights in her van, where they stayed for three days.

Mary Adkins is a writer in New York.
